Computing - Introduction to Variables

Image
In Computing this week, Year 6 have been introduced to the concept of variables. We ran and modified code, before designing some of our own using a score variable.

What does South America export?

Trade is an important part of life, either for small villages, towns, cities or globally.  South America mainly relies on agriculture as it has the right conditions to grow bananas, coffee and cocoa beans. It also exports wood, gold, minerals and so much more.

Computing - Variables in Games

Today in Computing, Year 6 have been exploring how to design and make a game to include variables. We looked at an example and thought about the components before designing our own version. We had to consider the variables needed, as well as how we could improve upon the example given.

Computing - Variables in Games

In Computing today, Year 6 have been modifying a game by using variables. We began by exploring all of the ways the game could be improved, and then added variables such as score, time and speed in order to make it better. We really enjoyed adapting the game and there were some fantastic ideas on show!

Computing - Variables in programming

In today's computing lesson, Year 6 were learning how to use variables in programming. We thought about the form that variables can take (numbers or text) and considered appropriate naming conventions, before designing some variables of our own.

Computing - Variables Continued

Image
In today's lesson, Year 6 have continued to develop their understanding of variables by using Scratch to create their own code. By first modifying some code that was given to us, we were able to identify where the variables had been used, meaning that we could make our own successful projects. There was lots of imagination on show, and we were even able to adapt the code further to personalise the finished program.

Computing - Introducing Variables

In today's lesson, Year 6 were introduced to the new computing concept of Variables. To start our journey into understanding this principle, we explored a Scratch project with variables and considered what we could observe about them. We then discussed how these change and can be programmed to change within the code. Next lesson we will be looking at how the code, and the variables, can be modified to affect the outcome of the program.

Computing - Introduction

In today's computing, Year 6 were introduced to the topics that will be covered this year. They were excited to discover that they would be doing more Scratch programming and physical computing, in addition to developing their video editing and web page creation skills. We talked about the importance of Computing in our everyday lives and thought about what the subject meant to us. We then considered how we use Computing now and how this might change in the future: can you think of any jobs that don't need some element of IT skill? Finally we spoke about staying safe online, and considered some rules for the Computing classroom. We thought really carefully about this and developed some ideas around what is acceptable use. We are looking forward to seeing where our Computing journey leads us this year!
