Biomes of South America

This week the children have begun their research on the different biomes found in South America. Already, they have found out some amazing facts.  Can you find the ‘high five’ hand in the Atacama Desert? Do you know how many grains of sand there are in a desert?  What does the word ‘chaparral mean?  Looking forward to seeing their research.

The yomp up the mountain continues… Here is a picture of our wall display - full of fact files all based the children’s own research. They are currently writing their suspense stories

Art - William Morris inspired wall paper design

This week Year 6 have began to create their very own wall paper designs inspired by the work of famous William Morris. His work is heavily inspired by nature including varieties of birds and plants.

RE DAY - Rituals

Image
Today was RE Day. Year 6 had the unit ‘Rituals’. We spent time looking at and discussing what rituals are, what it means and one’s that we already know or take part in. We then looked more closely at Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr and what rituals Muslims take part in.  We had some very mature discussions about the most important elements and why we think that - this gave way to some very mature responses that were thoughtful and well presented.  Here is some of the work we did…

French: lesson 3: Past tense of boire and manger

Year 6 revised food vocabulary and the present tense of boire and manger. They then learnt the past tense and had a go at using it with their partners and also writing it down.

French: lesson 2: Je voudrais

Year 6 learnt listened to their song about a restaurant. They then learnt new foo vocabulary and practised using these new words with Je voudrais, pretending that they were ordering food in a restaurant.

What is the climate of South America?

Image
South America has several climates depending on where you are. Some parts of South America are near the Equator such as Brazil, which has a tropical wet climate - this only happens near the equator. The Atacama Desert which is located in Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina is the hottest and driest desert  in the world, thus it has an arid climate. Rising high are the Andes, that run nearly the whole length of South America. The climate here changes depending on your location.

Maths- Decimals

Image
Learning Objective: I can multiply decimals  This week the children have turned their attention to multiplying decimals. We began the week by multiplying decimals by 1 digit before moving on to harder multiplications. The children showed great place value knowledge throughout the week as they multiplied their decimals. Each lesson the children also worked on 'sticky knowledge' which is two questions in which the children revisit old topics such as adding decimals or fractions. This is a great opportunity to embed their knowledge further or refresh forgotten topics. As an extension, we also looked at an incredibly challenging equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages Tarsia Puzzle which looked at matching up FDPs. The children worked incredible hard on this extension which some managed to finish without any help!!

ENGLISH - Fact Files

Finally! Year 6 were pleased to hear that they can now start putting their research together to write their fact files about Everest. Being focussed and keen, they worked hard to start putting their information together using a range of powerful and descriptive sentences. Here are a few pictures of us starting our files.
