2022-24 Year 6 Blog

 Today Year 6 were privileged to have met The Stripes musical drama group who came in to show them through acting and music that it’s ok to be different and that differences with our friends and peers can be a positive thing. The group acted out through amazing musicianship how different characters felt when one of the group wanted to do something different to the ‘usual’ things they do. We felt the anger, frustration, sadness and joy through their playing and their actions.  We had a great Q&A session afterwards and the children gave some great responses and observations. Afterwards,, the children decided to write some reviews of the performance, which we sent to the group to help them reach even more schools.

 The theme for Anti-Bullying this year is ‘Reach Out’ with the main focus of encouraging children to reach out for help if/when they or their friends are being bullied or even if they have been bullying someone else. Year 6 listened carefully to the live lesson on Monday and started to identified trusted adults that they could reach out to. Today, they spent some time thinking about how they can help and wrote letters to children who have reached out to them - whether they are victims or bullies. There was some very thoughtful responses.

 To finish off our water safety unit, we watched a short video from the RNLI about rip currents and how to  cope if your got caught in one. We listened to the story of a young man who followed the advice ‘Float to Survive’ and was able to share his experience.  We then created posters for either the beach or the swimming pool for younger children.

On Monday morning, our Year 6s took part in their CPR training with Sally from the NHS.  Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is  a lifesaving technique that's useful in many emergencies, such as a heart attack or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.  We learnt about the numbers we can phone in an emergency: 999 or 112. We then learnt about a really good app called ‘what three words’ which is where every 3 squared metre of the world is given three random words. Our three words for the school hall is: bookshelf, overdrive and geek.  Sally then described why people some people have heart attacks and how we can best to help them. She went through DR ABC and then demonstrated how we perform CPR on the dummy and how to use the   defibrillator appropriately.  The children were all brilliant in their questioning and application of all the skills learnt.
