Coastal features and processes

Image
Sticky knowledge is the first step in every Geography lesson, recapping coasts and if they can change.  During the next part of the lesson the children were introduced to new vocabulary such as: Longshore Drift, Erosion, Transportation, Abrasion and Deposition. Physical Geography is amazing and the children watched a clip demonstrating how objects/pebbles move along the beach (Longshore Drift) as well as understanding how grounds stops the movement of sand and pebbles. From here, the children used play dough to act out the processes of change from a headland to a cave, arch, stack and then a stump. Observing the children explore and explain the various processes allowed them to develop a deeper understanding of the different coastal features.

Year 6 revised theme park rides vocabulary and multiples of 10. They then asked each other how much it cost to buy a ticket for each ride. They then wrote down their conversation for different rides using a given sentence structure.

Year 6 started a new topic all about theme parks. They looked briefly at 3 theme parks found in France. They then learnt the vocabulary of different rides and revised multiples of 10 to 100. They then marched the new vocabulary to images of the different rides.

More than just a day at the seaside

This week, year six began a new unit: coasts.  Using seven pictures of the coast from around the world, the children needed to come up with a definition of what a coast is. Most children knew it had something to do with water and the land. Together they agreed it was the point where the sea/ocean meets the land.  M Next, the children were given 9 pictures of different coastal features and they had to match each feature to the picture. Do you know what a tombolo or a stack are?  Finally, they used maps and atlases as well as their locational knowledge to locate where the different coasts are located in the world. Then they debated if coasts change over time.
