More than just a day at the seaside

This week, year six began a new unit: coasts.

Using seven pictures of the coast from around the world, the children needed to come up with a definition of what a coast is. Most children knew it had something to do with water and the land. Together they agreed it was the point where the sea/ocean meets the land.

Next, the children were given 9 pictures of different coastal features and they had to match each feature to the picture. Do you know what a tombolo or a stack are?

Finally, they used maps and atlases as well as their locational knowledge to locate where the different coasts are located in the world. Then they debated if coasts change over time.
