ENGLISH - using the text to create character descriptions

Image
Today, Year 6 had to pull out key facts and details about the four main character in Malala’s story: Malala, her mother, her father and The Taliban. Once they had the key details, they had to chose one of the characters to write in detail about. We had some great descriptions, that were true to the facts and informative.  So far, the children are really enjoying learning about Malala’s story and her accomplishments all for the Right to Learn.

ENGLISH - For the Right to Learn : Malala Yousafzai Story

Year 6 have begun their new writing unit - For the Right to Learn. They have spent a couple of days looking at The United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child. Children looked at 3 different groups of the different Articles (there are 41 altogether) linked to Basic Needs, Safe from Harm and Expressing Themselves. They then had to choose their most important 5 and explain why they had chosen them. This created some great discussions and has opened up some possible further development later in the year! Today, we explored information around an image and looked at the front and back covers of the book. Children immediately realised why we looked at the Rights beforehand! Article 28 - Every child has the right to an education. Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child. Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this. We then read t...

Finally! Year 6 were pleased to hear that they can now start putting their research together to write their fact files about Everest. Being focussed and keen, they worked hard to start putting their information together using a range of powerful and descriptive sentences. Here are a few pictures of us starting our files.

READING - Friday Groups

Image
We have gone straight back into our Friday Groups for reading.  This week, Mrs McQueen’s group revisited the techniques of skimming and scanning a text to pick out quickly key information. Using highlighters and against the clock the children are becoming more confident and already have a wide range of answers highlighted.  Then, going through a range of retrieval questions, we checked to see how much we had highlighted - for most of us we found all the answers and were able to answer these questions accurately and quickly. We then began to look at vocabulary and what some of the unfamiliar words mean. Finally finishing off with answers that needed justifying with something from the text. There was a great buzz around the room and some super discussions. Next week we will see what a different group is up to!

READING

Image
Everyone in Year 6 has been given a Reading Journal. This is to allow them to track and record what they have been reading. Whether they read at home or at school, the children have been asked to record the book and page numbers and if they want to a comment about what they have read.  If an adult hears them, they too can jot an entry in the journal.  We would like the journals to go back and forth from home to school so any opportunities to read can be recorded. We’ve spent a few minutes this afternoon kick-starting them. Please encourage them to read a little at home and ask to see their journals from time to time as we will do in school too.  As Dr Seuss says, “The more you read, the more things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you will go!”
