The youngest person to climb to the summit was 13 years old

It can take up to 40 days to climb the mountain

The oldest person was 80 years old

No animals can live above 6100m

It grows by approx. 40mm every year - 40cm every 100 years

One person has climbed 24 times

310 people have died trying

Over 5000 people have reached the summit 

Everest is over 60 million years old

One person has stayed on the summit for 21 hours

There is over 8000kg of frozen human poo on the mountain

You need to consume up to 10,000 Calories per day while climbing

A blind person, amputees, diabetics and persons with a range of disabilities and illness have summited the mountain

South America

 This term the children will be studying South America. Here is a copy of their journey.  During the first part of the lesson, the children recapped the different lines of latitude and longitude they have learnt throughout key stage 2. Then, they compared four different types of maps about South America: relief maps, political maps, tectonic plate maps and language maps.  Finally, the children used their knowledge of longitude and latitude as well as understanding that there is 15 degrees between each line of latitude on a map. Once this was understood, the children identified the latitude and longitude for different places on the world map.
