Learning objective: I can work out problems relating to missing values This week the children have been working really hard on angles within triangles, quadrilaterals and on a point. The children worked hard embedding their known facts: 180 degrees on a straight line, 360 degrees around a point among many other facts. Having embedded their known facts they worked out missing values on angles within triangles, quadrilaterals and in circles. The children worked really hard independently on these challenges and impressed with their knowledge. 

Learning objective: I can understand the key vocabulary of ‘cube’ and ‘cuboid’ and how to work out the volume of shapes. The children first looked at problems where they were given all three measurements, they then used their formula (V = lhw) to then calculate the volume. All the children did this successfully- well done. After this they worked out problem solving questions, where they had to apply their knowledge to work out questions where they weren’t given all the measurements, you can see examples of these types of questions answered perfectly. 

 Learning objective: To calculate the area and perimeter of different shapes.  This week the children are focusing on calculating the area and perimeter of different shapes. Firstly, they focused on area of recent ages, using the formula: a = lb and then p = 2l + 2b for perimeter. The children used their knowledge and understanding of Algebra excellently to establish their procedure.  Towards the end of the week, the children looked at how to calculate are and perimeter of both parallelograms and triangles, using formula once again.  The pictures below are some of the work produced during this time.

 Learning objectives: To compare quantities of amounts and find missing values. Our first lesson of the week we looked at our last lesson comparing quantities. We looked more complex numbers and even looked at missing values and scale factors. The second picture shows scale factors of rectangles and the pupil has explained scale factor and what mistake has been made.  The children did brilliant work throughout and should be very proud of their efforts this week. Well done Year 6. 

 Learning objective: I can use percentages to compare This week the children looked at finding percentages of change. The children used bar models to help their understanding of percentages. The children really impressed throughout this week with their understanding of equivalent fractions, percentages and decimals and how this can help us. As you can see in one of the pictures below (three problem solving questions) the child has had to find missing values of percentages, thinking about a question they could ask in relation to the bar model and working out worded problem. They’ve aced all of them 😊

 Learning Objective: I can understand the phrase multiple and find common multiples of two or more numbers.  Year 6s started off with thinking about the difference between multiples and factors. A factor is one of two or more numbers that divides a given number without a remainder. A multiple of a number is a number that can be divided evenly by another number without a remainder.  We looked at how we can work out the answers efficiently and accuracy with the children working really hard throughout. We worked through real world contexts as shown in the picture below.  We are working on another couple of lessons of multiples and factors before we move on to fractions. 

 Learning objectives: I can multiply by two digit numbers  Our Year 6s built upon their place value knowledge and multiplication skills to start multiplying numbers by two digit numbers. The pupils first looked at partitioning the numbers then multiplying. For instance when calculating 123 x 42, the children would work out 123 x 10 then multiply that answer by 4. Then multiply 123 x 2 and add the resulting answer together with the answer to 123 x 40.  After the children had conceptually understood what multiplication is, we moved on to a formal method of working. All pupils worked really hard throughout this week and should be proud of their efforts. 

 LO: I can round numbers to 10 million  This week in Year 6 we have looked to round numbers to 10 million. Before we started on large numbers, we focused on recapping our prior knowledge from Year 5. Both classes came up with a set of rules for rounding and were able to explain it coherently before we began.  The children first looked at thinking about the closest two multiples to that number, then working out if we round up or down. We round down when the digit in the place value column to the right is lower than 5. 5 or above we round up.  We had two days on rounding, with the children improving as the lessons went on. Some of the children went on and tackled problem solving and reasoning questions.  Well done on another great week Year 6. 

 Learning objectives: I can read and write numbers to 10 million, I can compare and order numbers to 10 million This week the children in Year 6 have started on their maths journey and have shown amazing fortitude in their knowledge and understanding of Place Value up to numbers of 10 million.  We first revisited prior learning of Y5 to make sure they had remember the correct vocabulary (digits, value, place holders and numbers). Mr Lines was extremely impressed throughout the week of everyone’s explanation skills of problems and reasoning tasks. All children were able to successfully achieve the lessons’ objectives and more.  We also created numbers using dice to then compare and order them. All the children were able to explain and talk through how we compare and order numbers.  Well done Y6, keep up the hard work.
