 Today, year 6 put their knowledge into practise by creating their own Mayan temples. Why do you think the real temples look how they do? 

Today, year six began to research Ancient Mayan buildings and cities. We already know that the Ancient Mayans are famous for their temples. But how big were they? How many were there and how many are left? When was the oldest temple built? What were they used for? Where were ball courts built for the legendary games of Pok-a-took? We found our answers as well as a plethora of fascinating facts and theories about this ancient architecture.   Next time, we will use our research to start building our own replicas of Ancient Maya buildings!

This week, it's time to show off our knowledge of the Ancient Maya! Year 6 are creating posters which answer the following questions? Who were the Ancient Maya? Where and when did they live? How did their civilisation grow so well in such a tricky climate?

Last week, we explored secondary sources to help us understand the growth of the Ancient Maya Civilisation. Our key question was: how did their civilisation live so well for so long in the Central American climate? Year 6 came up with their own suggestions before exploring ideas that historians have come up with. This week, we showed off our understanding of the growth of the Ancient Maya Civilisation by writing an explanation of how the Maya people might have tackled the challenges that they faced. 

Today in History, year 6 met their their new history teacher, who asked them: why do we study History? The class shared their ideas and were inspired by the famous quote, "the more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future" ~Theodore Roosevelt. We discussed a range of events from human history and considered what we can learn from them. For example, The Great Fire of London, WWII, the Roman Empire... Miss Studd was blown away by Year 6's reflective discussion. Next week - we will begin our study of the Mayans!
