READING - Friday Groups

We have gone straight back into our Friday Groups for reading. 

This week, Mrs McQueen’s group revisited the techniques of skimming and scanning a text to pick out quickly key information. Using highlighters and against the clock the children are becoming more confident and already have a wide range of answers highlighted. 

Then, going through a range of retrieval questions, we checked to see how much we had highlighted - for most of us we found all the answers and were able to answer these questions accurately and quickly. We then began to look at vocabulary and what some of the unfamiliar words mean. Finally finishing off with answers that needed justifying with something from the text.

There was a great buzz around the room and some super discussions. Next week we will see what a different group is up to!

 Year 6  today  have been learning about musical notes and the beats attached to them. They then looked closely at a small section of Stravinsky’s melody. We clapped out the rhythm (several times - due to some random beats!) and then had a try at playing this section on the xylophones.

South America

 This term the children will be studying South America. Here is a copy of their journey.  During the first part of the lesson, the children recapped the different lines of latitude and longitude they have learnt throughout key stage 2. Then, they compared four different types of maps about South America: relief maps, political maps, tectonic plate maps and language maps.  Finally, the children used their knowledge of longitude and latitude as well as understanding that there is 15 degrees between each line of latitude on a map. Once this was understood, the children identified the latitude and longitude for different places on the world map.
