Tsunamis

Tsunami is a Japanese word meaning ‘harbour wave’. Approximately 80% of tsunamis happen inside the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire. A tsunami is caused by either an earthquake or volcano under water. Tsunamis can go about as fast as 500 miles (805 kilometres an hour), nearly the same speed as a jet plane. They are not tidal waves.

Today, the children watched a clip about the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. Just over 200,000 people died in this disaster. There were so many amazing discussions and sensible questions.
