2022-24 Year 6 Blog

 The theme for Anti-Bullying this year is ‘Reach Out’ with the main focus of encouraging children to reach out for help if/when they or their friends are being bullied or even if they have been bullying someone else. Year 6 listened carefully to the live lesson on Monday and started to identified trusted adults that they could reach out to. Today, they spent some time thinking about how they can help and wrote letters to children who have reached out to them - whether they are victims or bullies. There was some very thoughtful responses.

 Today we built on our learning from our previous lesson, looking at how we see coloured objects. Explaining how the white light from luminous objects is actually a spectrum of 7 colours, we learnt that a red object, absorbs all of the colours, except from red, which is reflected into our eyes. The children used scientific diagrams to explain how we see - which they explained using their scientific vocabulary.

 Learning objectives: I can compare and order fractions/ I can add and subtract fractions.  This week the children in Year 6 have been working hard on their understanding of comparing and ordering fractions throughout their maths lessons. We have been concentrating on using our previous knowledge of multiples and factors in helping us to either simplify or find equivalent fractions. The children looked at converting the fractions or mixed number to have the same denominator in order to compare or order them.  After a few lessons on working on comparing and ordering, we have begun to look at adding and subtracting fractions. Again the children used their previous knowledge of multiples and factors to convert fractions to have the same denominator in order to subtract or add them together.  As you can see, some of the work produced has been fantastic.

 Do you know the difference between a Hurricane, Cyclone and a Typhoon?  Well this week the children identified there is no difference between them except for where they are formed. Typhoons are formed in Asia as well as around China.Whereas, Hurricanes are formed around the Atlantic, Americas and the Caribbean Oceans and Cyclones are formed in the Indian Ocean and over the South Pacific  Tropical storms are all fed my warm air and they spin. Did you know that storms in the Northern Hemisphere rotate counter clockwise and storms in the Southern Hemisphere rotate clockwise?  Just like water going down a plug hole.

 Today we focussed on proving what white light is made of, answering many of our questions around colour and rainbows.  We created our own Newtons wheel, and proved that when we span it really fast, the colours became invisible, and instead we saw the colour white. We learned this is the opposite of how a rainbow is made, where the case is that light is split! We learned that the process of the seven colours becoming white, is called colour addition. Next week we will be exploring how we see colour, and why red objects are red, and blue are blue.

 Year 6 started their new topic, our world. Unfortunately, they weren’t t able to do much due to a Road Safety assembly. They did however start looking at the names of countries in Europe and the languages spoken there. They has a conversation with their partner, asking  them their names, what language they spoke and where they lived
