French: lesson 6: school timetable

 Year 6 sang their numbers song and revised school subject vocabulary, time and days of the week. They had a go at reading a timetable and answered  questions about when a subject ends and starts on a given day. They then completed a table choosing different subjects and times  which they then used to write in a  sentence.

What is Lima

  During the lesson, the children identified where Peru is and its capital city: Lima.  They had to guess how many times bigger Peru was than Great Britain. Do you know? Peru is actually four times bigger than Great Britain but has half the population. Why you ask? The land is mainly desert, the Andes are to the East and the coast is to the west.  They were then given 6 photos of Lima to discuss and compare - 3 were from urban Lima and 3 from rural Lima. The children were shocked how the people in rural Lima had to live without any clean water. Did you know Lima is permanently in fog. People who live there need to grow their own food but in order to do this they need water. Ingeniously, they have designed fog nets which trap the water from the fog. Each net can collect 400ml of water,: enough to water some of the ground. What are the Andes?

 This week the children looked at the physical geography of South America, particularly The Andes. The Andes is a mountain range which runs pretty much the whole length of the western side of South America. It also contains the highest mountains in the Americas, which are 22,831 feet high:Argentina’s Mount Aconcagua is the highest mountain. The Andes expands over 7 countries.

READING

Everyone in Year 6 has been given a Reading Journal. This is to allow them to track and record what they have been reading. Whether they read at home or at school, the children have been asked to record the book and page numbers and if they want to a comment about what they have read.  If an adult hears them, they too can jot an entry in the journal.  We would like the journals to go back and forth from home to school so any opportunities to read can be recorded. We’ve spent a few minutes this afternoon kick-starting them. Please encourage them to read a little at home and ask to see their journals from time to time as we will do in school too.  As Dr Seuss says, “The more you read, the more things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you will go!”
