Directional Language

 This term, year 6 will be studying South America. They began with their sticky knowledge question as well as identifying some new vocabulary they will need to understand. 



Starting their journey identifying where it is located and planning a route from the Isle of Wight to Brasilia (capital of Brazil). The children used an atlas to help them identify the different lines of latitude and longitude as well as countries they may visit on the way. Furthermore, they had to use the scale in the atlas to find the distance in km from the Isle of Wight to Brasilia and the time difference.

 Year 6  today  have been learning about musical notes and the beats attached to them. They then looked closely at a small section of Stravinsky’s melody. We clapped out the rhythm (several times - due to some random beats!) and then had a try at playing this section on the xylophones.

South America

 This term the children will be studying South America. Here is a copy of their journey.  During the first part of the lesson, the children recapped the different lines of latitude and longitude they have learnt throughout key stage 2. Then, they compared four different types of maps about South America: relief maps, political maps, tectonic plate maps and language maps.  Finally, the children used their knowledge of longitude and latitude as well as understanding that there is 15 degrees between each line of latitude on a map. Once this was understood, the children identified the latitude and longitude for different places on the world map.
