Post SATS activities - day 1 - movies and popcorn

Image
After a great start to SATS week with SPAG and spelling tests under their belts, year 6 chose 2 films to watch - half chose Avatar, while the other half watched Matilda the Musical. We lay on the floor, on tables, had pillows and bean bags and folded up coats to make ourselves comfortable. Hen the films were well under way, out came the popcorn! The Matilda room even had a bit of a sing-song afterwards!  A great, relaxing afternoon and one that was well deserved!

How can coasts be physically different?

Image
During the lesson the children identified how coasts are different and how they are used. Every coast has its own characteristics. Some are dominated by sand, shingle, mud, boulders cliffs and bays. These physical differences can dictate how the coasts are used. The children looked at pictures of different coasts around the world and identified that they were being used for: residential activities, fishing, tourism, recreation and leisure, ports, marinas and urban activities.  In groups, the children debated how people can benefit from living on a coast as well as the problems living near a coast. Some great discussions.

Coastal features and processes

Sticky knowledge is the first step in every Geography lesson, recapping coasts and if they can change.  During the next part of the lesson the children were introduced to new vocabulary such as: Longshore Drift, Erosion, Transportation, Abrasion and Deposition. Physical Geography is amazing and the children watched a clip demonstrating how objects/pebbles move along the beach (Longshore Drift) as well as understanding how grounds stops the movement of sand and pebbles. From here, the children used play dough to act out the processes of change from a headland to a cave, arch, stack and then a stump. Observing the children explore and explain the various processes allowed them to develop a deeper understanding of the different coastal features.

French: theme park ride prices: lesson 2

Year 6 revised theme park rides vocabulary and multiples of 10. They then asked each other how much it cost to buy a ticket for each ride. They then wrote down their conversation for different rides using a given sentence structure.
